PICC line...owie:(

This is JaCoby PICC line. I have no idea what it stands for but I know the whats and the whys. Newborn babies have very small veins...I know I know you already knew that but what you didn't know is that their veins are very fragile...okay so you knew that too. Having that out of the way, it is an IV line that they put in a larger vein in the arm and feed though closer to the heart. Like I said their veins are very fragile and the fail very quickly especially with the fluids they are giving him. TPN(again don't know what it stands for yada yada)fluids that they make individually for each baby. They draw blood and see what the baby's body is in need of and then they make the fluid. Lipids which is basically fats. They are doing this because he can't eat ANYTHING!!! So so crappy!! I know you're asking yourself, he has to be losing weight. Oh no he is gaining weight but yes he is VERY hungry:( Anyway when they have this central line in they are able to give him more concentrated doses because the amount of blood in your heart can dilute the fluid more quickly. Hence...a PICC line. What a decision to make for your 3 week old baby!
